From the Greek ἀγορά, assembly, from ἀγείρω, 'to gather'. Term used in ancient Greece to designate the square of the Greek city-states (polis), where citizens used to congregate.

It was an open space, the centre of administrative, religious, political and commercial life in cities. It was usually surrounded by the most important private and public buildings.
