Matias Romero City Hall
Zacatecas, Zacatecas (2019)
The project consists of the reconstruction of the City Hall on an 806 sqm property, using local brick as the predominant material in the building, in a rectangular configuration, establishing two main office cores that are articulated by a small semi-covered central plaza that integrates and generates shade in the waiting areas.
The building is distributed over two levels. The first level functions as a semi-basement and is at sidewalk level, with frontality and access towards Guerrero Street where the council hall, a small meeting room and community service areas are located.
The recognition of this level generates a kind of plinth or basement for the entire complex. The main façade of the building being a south façade, has a portico in front that allows shaded perimeter circulation on the second level where the office areas, services (bathrooms), offices and a central civic plaza are located. The project recognizes the natural ground level, forming sunken patios that allow lighting and cross ventilation of the lower level, in addition to giving privacy to these spaces.
The main material is based on red brick from the area with a format of roman brick and yellow quarry from Oaxaca, as a reinterpretation of the construction systems and materiality present in heritage buildings such as the Matías Romero station or the building site known as "The Blocks".
