Ixtepec train station
Ixtepec, Oaxaca (2023)

The project seeks the revitalization of the Ciudad Ixtepec railway station, as a fundamental piece in the interoceanic corridor, complementing its set with different urban architectural elements that serve both the community and the floating population that will arrive for a limited time in Ciudad Ixtepec, a place for temporary stay and recreation.

The old station considers the restoration of the building, cataloged by the INAH within the National Catalog of Historical Monuments, due to its architectural and industrial relevance. Inside it houses a waiting area and services for passengers, an administrative area and a rest area; at the south end, the building annexed to the original station, becomes a community development center.

The second component of the project is the multi-purpose roofed area, which seeks to strengthen attention to the community and the migrant population, generating a flexible space for staying and recreation in the shade. The area has a covered surface supported by a portico with 20 columns per side in a longitudinal direction, which make up the façade facing, in a completely open space, which limits the pedestrian walkway of the recreation space.

The third component of the project is the Building under the Ceiba, which served as the roadmaster's house, and was heavily damaged in the 2017 earthquakes. The project proposed the restructuring and rehabilitation of this space, repurposing it as a small library that can lend books for reading under the shade of the tree. The complex is complemented by a small square towards the north end and in relation to the water tank, redefining this space as the San Jeronimo Water Tower Plaza.
