Mexicali, Baja California (2023)
The proposal calls for complete demolition of the existing building due to structural damage, and construction of a completely new building on the same location. The design concept of the new construction and its assembly are based on the intention of generating an urban icon for Angeles de Puebla neighborhood and Mexicali in an environment of low urban and architectural quality.
The new building is visualized as an elongated monolith with a gable roof almost entirely built with rustic block manufactured locally in brown, evoking the silhouette of the Sierra Cucapa that is part of the landscape on the horizon of Mexicali, giving character and identity to the building. Flexibility is one of the attributes of the building, allowing it to be disaggregated into two main components: a covered interior space where a large multipurpose room is located that can be subdivided into three smaller spaces, and a covered outdoor space that in determining times and times of the year can function as an extension of the interior living room, allowing the useful area to be expanded when required.
The proposal is complemented towards the outside by creating a desert garden in front of the building, as an “oasis” within the linear park that currently lacks vegetation and natural shade, thus generating a focal point for appreciation, rest and social gathering under the trees, and allowing the architectural program of the recreational center to be expanded.
